Behind The Lens

Location

This location is on a dirt road several miles west of the interstate highway 17. It is south east of Prescott, AZ.

Time

Mid day with very bright sunshine.

Lighting

Living in Arizona, I find myself searching for clouds. When I post processed this image, I chose to use a sepia effect. I wanted to convey the obvious that the barn is old and it’s hot and dry.

Equipment

Shot with an Olympus OMD E1 and a 12mm f 2.0 Zuiko lens.

Inspiration

Wandering around with a camera looking for something to shoot other than rocks and dirt.

Editing

The natural color of the barn is brown. A sepia tone seemed a natural fit. I keep my camera on aperture priority most of the time. I start with an aperture of f 8. I almost always shoot at 200 iso and auto white balance. My first step in post processing is to check the white balance of the image in raw. Rarely do I change much unless the conditions are extreme. Next I fiddle with the shadow exposure. I seek to make my images speak for themselves without an obvious processed look.

In my camera bag

OMD E1 and E5 mk II. 75mm 1.8, 45mm 1.8, 25mm 1.8, 17mm 1.8, 12mm 2.0, and a 75-300 zoom. It sounds like a lot of stuff, but whole point of micro 4/3rds is smaller, lighter equipment. The whole package fits in a mailbag with one camera and lens around my neck. I used to carry a tripod all the time but I never used it much. It stays in the car. If I’m shooting an event, I may carry a flash with a bracket. Extra batteries, flash cards, and polarizing filters are a must.

Feedback

Photography is all about seeing. Seeing is all about imagination. You have to know how to use what ever you choose to have for equipment. The equipment only sees what you point it at. Spend some energy learning to see. Something that help me was to spend some time at the library thumbing through books of famous photographs.
