Location
This photo was taken at Mustang Island State Park, on North Padre Island, Texas. There is so much at this park to take in and capture. The staff is very friendly and try their best to make you feel at home.Time
I took this photo right as the sun was coming up. I would always get up before sunrise and walk down to the beach. I believe that when the sun first comes up in the morning, it's like a renewal on life. Like a baby taking it's first breathe of air. Everything is reborn from the day before.Lighting
When it comes to getting the perfect shot, lighting is the key. I look at all the aspects. First of all the dramatic effect of the natural sunlight. Does it highlight what I am focussing on? Is the focal point noticeable? After I go through all my creative ideas in my head( which happens in a matter of seconds), I then snap the shot. After I take the shot I thoroughly look over the picture. My goal is to capture shots that really stand out and relay the creative image that I had in my vision at that time.Equipment
I use a Nikon D3100 that I received for my birthday. I like using the Nikon over a Canon, even though most professionals say that the Nikon is harder to navigate. I like a challenge. It keeps me on my toes, not to mention that the harder the camera is to figure out, the better I am going to be as a photographer. The lens I used was the Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm lens. I rarely use the flash on my camera. I believe that the natural sunlight gives you a more dramatic photo outside. The flash takes away what your eyes really see. I only use a flash when I don't have the natural sunlight helping me.Inspiration
I love taking sunrise shots. This particular shot was taken just after the sun came up. There was a haze as the sun was warming up the dew that had set in during the night. All around the campground was this grass. This park is so amazing to stay at and shoot photographs. You get the sunrise at the beach, which is around 1000ft from the camper parking, and the sunset all without any modern interference. On that particular day there wasn't that many occupants in the campground. So I had the perfect setting. The sun lit up the grass with this beautiful orange glow. I didn't realize how beautiful this shot was until after I downloaded it to my computer.Editing
When I took this photo all I had for editing was the program that came with my camera. So what I did to the photo was very minimal. I sharpened the image just a few degrees and I adjusted the amount of saturation just a little bit. I wanted people to see the beauty in natural lighting. So with that being said, I didn't manipulate the photograph at all.In my camera bag
When I am getting ready to go on a shoot I like to pack lite. So I don't normally take my camera bag with me. Sometimes I will put a smaller lens ( like a 18-55mm )in my pocket just in case. Since I am just starting out I really don't have that much equipment at this time.Feedback
I am no expert and I am also my worst critic. So the advice I have for someone trying to capture a shot like this, is to use what nature has to offer us. Look at the time of day. For a shot like this it has to be first thing in the morning. You need to have the sun at just the right angle to get the same effect I did. Also you have to get low. I mean sometime when I am out shooting, I will lay on my stomach to get that perfect shot. So wear something that you don't mind getting a little dirty and get low and take a look around. You will be amazed at how different everything looks.
