Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Great Camp Sagamore in New York state. It was once owned by the Vanderbilt family and was a summer retreat for the family and their friends. It was a place they went to escape the unpleasant aspects of life in New York in the late 1800's when the summer heat would activate all the smells of the city. Think horse poop in the streets, after all, this was before cars.

Time

This was shot in the late afternoon as the sun was going down and the light was warm and low in the west.

Lighting

This was natural light in the late afternoon.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 with an old Nikkor manual focus lens from the olden days before auto focus. It was either a 24mm or a 35mm.

Inspiration

I liked the way the light was coming in and allowed detail in the shadows without blowing out the highlights. It was very warm and created a feeling that suited the scene.

Editing

I am a film photographer by history and do my own black and white printing in the darkroom, therefore, I don't try to create a photo that is over processed. I used very minimal increases in contrast while bringing down the highlights and opening up the shadows slightly in Lightroom. I generally make the kinds of adjustments in Lightroom one can make in a traditional wet darkroom.

In my camera bag

I typically carry three prime lenses in my bag. A medium wide angle, a 50mm equivalent and a medium telephoto in the 85 to 135 range. No zooms allowed. I don't use flash.

Feedback

I try to have something to say when I take a picture. I look for a composition that is interesting and I try to fill the frame and cover the corners. I used to shoot a lot of slides, so correct exposure and composition are important. Basically, I want to take a photo that I want to look at again and will stand the test of time. If I get it right, one shot will do the trick.
