Shot underwater in a pool. Used black cloth as background. Was a very difficult shoot because the wig she wears kept floating to the surface and it was almost impossible for her to dive down.

I took this photo underwater in a pool in New Jersey that was designed for scuba classes. It was the only one that was deep enough for what I had in mind.Time
It was during the day, sometime in December.Lighting
I used the natural light that came through the roof, as well as the lights in the room and my Ikelite DS125 strobe on my camera.Equipment
I used my Nikon D700 with a 20mm f2.8 lens in an Ikelite underwater housing and a 9 inch dome port and my Ikelit DS125 strobe on a flex arm.Inspiration
I was thinking about a photo shooting like this for a long time. It took me actually 3 or 4 months from the time I started planning to the actual shoot. I needed to find the right model, make-up artist, hair stylist and designer for a dress that shows especially well underwater. There was also a videographer at the beginning who wanted to film the shoot and model (he had to back out of the project unfortunately), but I still insisted on doing it. I was fortunate enough to get a great model from a well known model agency, a great make-up artist and also a hair stylist and designer who worked for companies like Gucci before. He definitely had the biggest job with creating this amazing wig and making a dress. But he did it all in a week.Editing
I used a black cotton background in the pool but I still needed to make it really black afterwords because it came out as dark grey. Also there were a lot of particles and bubbles in the water that I had to get rid of one by one in Photoshop. Some color correction, sharpening, contrast adjustments at the end. Overall it took me probably 5-6 hrs to get this result. In my camera bag
It's hardly ever the same. I always plan my photo shoots and pack accordingly. The minimums are my Nikon D700 and 20mm f2.8 plus the 50mm f1.4.Feedback
My best advice is start step by step. I started scuba diving when I was 14 years old. When I was 17 I got my first small digital camera in a not so fancy housing from my uncle who is also into diving and photography. I immediately got hooked and when I was 19, after I graduated from school I went to Madeira, Portugal to work as a scuba dive guide and that is when I bought a housing and strobe for my DSLR. I got a lot of practice during that time. Before you go into the water with equipment that is easily worth a couple thousand dollars plus very heavy (around 15+ lbs) you need to make sure you are a very, and I repeat myself, very comfortable diver. There is no time underwater to learn your camera gear and your photography gear. So be a comfortable diver and swimmer and then get into the photography part. Also be aware of the costs that come with this wonderful hobby.
