Those trees and their branches seem to be an infinite curtain which tenderly lies down on the human way. Well done.

Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken near Ballymoney County Antrim Northern Ireland, a friend and myself were out and about we stopped here at the dark hedges. I was very much a novice photographer at this time with my digital camera, these trees amazed me so much and was so excited to get my image. I had seen other photographers work and this seemed to be a must for any photographer. This was taken in 2013 in March. Of course since this has been a location since then used in the famous Gamer Of Thrones you would not get this kind of opportunity now, so many people there and as the trees are in a fairly poor state fencing has been put up. People from all over the world are now arriving to view this wonderful site.

Time

It was afternoon and the light was beautiful just right, of course photographing these particular trees was a challenge for me as an amateur photographer, but also the bark of these trees are almost silver so the control of the light coming through was really difficult, further on in my photography journey I have learned so much, but on seeing my images I was thrilled.

Lighting

As explained the bark of the trees and the way the light hits it can be so difficult to get right but I did and was so pleased. I loved the tangled shapes the trees made and when editing the only way I felt to capture the mood of the scene was to present it in mono to give that spooky feel I am really a mono person, I love to capture the inner soul of people and the mood of a scene, take the colour away and you find something quite different, of course some things would never work in mono because our brain automatically colours especially in nature.

Equipment

I think it was a Nikon d300s at the time and 18-55 tripod no flash, that was really the only lens I had at that time.

Inspiration

I had often saw other images of this place and did aspire to add it as a must have image, I was so please on that day my friend took me to it.

Editing

As I have said this was early on in my photography journey and photoshop was no different, but from portraits I had been taking early on mono was my first go to edit, and this image was so mono. I did this very simply moving sliders and adding warmth taking down highlights etc I work on what I see in front of me until I reach the point of enough happy with that. Remember you are the artist, photoshop or any programme are tools just like your camera, it is your eyes and satisfaction of what you have created that is wonderful.

In my camera bag

I do have a lot of equipment now of course, collected over a period of time, I have Nikon D610, Nikon D800, Fuji XT-2. Depending on what im doing I usually take one camera and one lens, I am mainly a portrait photographer, out in natural light and on the street, I love the stories behind my images and remember the people and their stories when I look at the images. 50mm 1.4 lens is super for this and a reflector or white card. Wild life and sports I use Nikon 200-600 f5.6. Nature. I use my Nikon 105mm f2.8 macro and also a 60mm f2.8 macro lens. I also use a 24-70 lens for street photography,

Feedback

I think when you start your photography journey you will photograph everything for a while, suddenly you find yourself enjoying a particular area of photography and you feel your more confident doing that then that's what you stick to as your field. Broaden your mind into all aspects of course because this allows you to appreciate other peoples work. I appreciate those who take amazing landscapes simply because I am not good at all in this area. The best thing of all is have loads of fun and don't get hung up on big lenses or expensive cameras, because we never take a picture we MAKE a picture, you are an artist you find the light first and the beauty comes with it.
