Behind The Lens
Location
Keystone Ski Area in Dillon, Colorado.Time
I believe it was around 3 in the afternoon.Lighting
All natural light. It was overcast and was snowing lightly.Equipment
A Nikon D100 with a 70-200mm f2.8 lens. I shot in aperture priority with the lens opened all the way to blur the background, as it was a boring concrete wall.Inspiration
I was hired by the skating club which put on the show to photograph it for their members. This young lady was doing excellent spins and the temp was about 15 degrees, so I liked the color on her cheeks.Editing
I boosted the contrast and used curves. I also fixed a few holes in her stocking by her skates. In my camera bag
2-Nikon D90's, an 85mm f1.4 Nikkor lens; 18-75mm f/3.5-5.6 kit Nikkor lens; 70-200 f/2.8 Nikkor lens; 50mm 1.4 Nikkor lens; 2-SB 700 flash units and various batteries, cards, etc.Feedback
Know your equipment! Knowing I wanted to blur out the background I was able to choose a lens with a wide aperture to achieve my goal. This also allowed me to use a fast shutter speed to freeze the action of her spin. Also keep plenty of batteries when shooting in cold weather, they tend to wear out faster than your used to, also keep them in your pocket. Try different angles, I was sitting on the ice to get a lower angle because I didn't like the way images looked from a standing viewpoint.
