Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in Belize, just outside the Belize Zoo while on business there a few years ago. Timing is everything--we see this egret showing off his breeding plumage.

Time

It was late afternoon. It was sunny, but at the edge of the jungle, so there were lots of shadows.

Lighting

This was taken in ambient light. I used spot-metering, rather than center-weighted or general metering. This allowed the whites to pop and the background to be darkened out.

Equipment

I took this with a Nikon E8800--my traveling camera at that time.

Inspiration

The sheer beauty of this egret in all his glory was irresistible.

Editing

The spot-metering I used made this nearly perfect. I used Photo Shop just to darken the background slightly and to size the photo.

In my camera bag

My bag normally has my Nikon D800E body with Nikon's 200 - 500mm f/5.6 lens, their 28 - 300 mm f/3.5 - 5.6 lens, and their 14 - 24 mm f/2.8 lens. I also carry Nikon's 60 mm f/2.8 macro lens. I also carry UV filter and a monopod.

Feedback

For stand-out pictures, use spot-metering. Multiple shots for the same picture, varying aperture, shutter speed, and possibly ISO will ensure you get the best possible exposure. Be ready--many photos are "crimes of opportunity." Pick your best, and delete the rest. I like aperture-preferred for most shots to control depth of field. The exception is for high-speed shots. When photoing fast or high-speed objects, shutter speed preferred is the best mode.
