This is a sponge diver ready to go into the water and dive to get sponge from the natural waters. It is at Tarpon Springs, Florida which is known as the world's supplier for sponge. His suit alone is approx. 70 lbs. and an additional weight is added hanging from around the neck as you see. In his right hand is the instrument that he uses to grab the sponge from under. Sponges come in many sizes and different texture. They are cleaned and sorted prior to going to market for sale. When the sponge was gathered and brought into the boat for passengers to view, it was black, needing much cleaning and upon being clean the natural sponge is various shades of beige in color. I personally have used natural sponges for many reasons and one little broken off piece I've used in acrylic painting and loved it. Also for bathing, washing, etc. Tarpon Springs is known for the Greek culture as is the captain and diver in this vessel. The market has Greek specialties from shops to restraunts and hand made soaps, etc. A great day trip...
