Behind The Lens

Location

In my small home studio

Time

Afternoon

Lighting

Two Elinchrom BX500 lights left and right of my son

Equipment

Canon 5D MKIII, 24-70 f2.8 lens, reflector

Inspiration

My son rented this outfit that morning for a themed birthday party, and when he walked out the room and asked for my opinion looking all handsome, I immediately asked him to come and sit for a few photos. He was my model for about 5 years when I needed to test out new equipment :-)

Editing

Most of the time yes. This specific photo was taken on a black backdrop and the scene behind my son was edited in afterwards.

In my camera bag

x2 Canon 5D MKIII bodies, 24-72 f2.8 lens, 70-200 f2.8 lens, 100 f2.8 macro lens, x3 600EX-RT flashes with an ST E3 RT Speedlite Transmitter, various filters and light shaping accessories x2 Fuji XT1 bodies, two lenses and a Lee Grad ND filter

Feedback

Practice, practice, practice. When you have someone available, like my son, use them to practice. This way you get to know your equipment and you create awesome memories of someone special. When it comes to post production editing, Google is your oyster, with tons of tutorials and youtube tips and tricks. This is easily my biggest addiction, and I spend hours trying new things and sometimes loose track of time. Take breaks and don’t rush it. My biggest inspiration comes from people like Aad Sommeling, Calvin Hollywood, Aaron Nace from Phlearn.com, John Wilhelm (using his daughters for most of his artwork) and tons more.
