Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from our garden in Henfield, West Sussex.

Time

It was early in the morning. Interestingly, it was the day we were due to leave for a 3 week holiday in South America, I was therefore up early to finish the last minute packing. I looked out of the window and saw the most amazing sunrise. I quickly grabbed the camera that was packed ready for travel and took a few images. The caption I put on the image was "this is a reminder that no matter how far you travel, there is nowhere like home."

Lighting

The lighting was really, really dramatic. I didn't do very much post processing. Just moved the highlights and shadow levers a little.

Equipment

I used my full frame Nikon DF with my fixed 50mm lens. My tripod was packed in the suitcase so this was freehand.

Inspiration

It was a photo that just couldn't be missed. Even with all the last minute tasks that needed doing before leaving for my holiday it screamed at me to stop and capture this moment.

Editing

As I said, I did very little post processing. I I used lightroom and moved the highlight and shadow levers a little. I was concerned that it was a little too vibrant but didn't want to alter what was the reality of the scene I captured.

In my camera bag

I have my lovely Nikon DF which is a full frame camera that has been given a retro look. It is not too heavy particularly when I have one of the fixed lenses on. , I have a number of fixed lenses, a 24 mm, a 50 mm and an 8 year old 105 mm. I also have a a Nikon zoom 18-300. I have a number of filters, some of which I found in a bargain box in a local camera shop. I also bought a 10 stop ND filter when I visited Tenerife last year. I have a Redged tripod with a swivel ball head.

Feedback

Oh I am sure I should have used a tripod and thought a little longer about how best to compose the image.. I know I have to grow to love my tripod. However, it was impossible to use it as it was at the bottom of my suitcase. Also, these vibrant sunrises disappear very quickly so sometimes you just have to be quick and make the best of it.
