On my Dad's farm in North Fort Myers, FL, looking out over the horse pasture.Time
I was staying with my Dad, helping him lay new fence for the horse pasture. I woke to one of the most misty mornings I had ever seen. After feeding the horses, I walked to check if the fence poles were ready for attaching the fence and was drawn to how the sunrise through the mist backlit the trees. I didn't have my camera with me, so pulled out my phone to take the picture. This image was taken around 7am.Lighting
I was taking some classes to work on improving my photography at the time and one of my assignments was to use backlight to create silhouetes. I had spent time trying to create a backlit scene with my studio lights, but the sun made a much better image.Equipment
Windows phone with Leis lens.Inspiration
I love taking photos of unusual sunsets. I live, travel, and work on the road from my RV and have photographed a lot of sunsets. This image taken from my Dad's farm is still my favorite. I love the unusual red color, the softness created by the mist dispersing the light. The sharp contrast of the trees in the foreground.Editing
Due to the way the mist dispersed the light, the image was a little white washed so I applied a red filter to bring out the red I had seen and increased the contrast to bring the trees a little more in focus. In my camera bag
I used to carry a Canon rebel with a 35mm lens and tripod everywhere I went. As I started hiking more, with little ones in tow, I noticed I was using my camera less and less. It was just easier and faster to pull out my phone and use that. I started researching camera phones. My go to until discontinued was a windows phone with manual controls and a Zeiss lens. Now I use a OnePlus 7T Pro. I love that professional grade cameras are being integrated into phones now. Makes getting to remote hiking areas so much easier with less equipment to tote.Feedback
Don't be afraid to capture an image you like just because the weather isn't perfect or you don't think you have the right equipment with you. Always be in the moment and use what you have on hand. Most of the time, with our current technology any image can be enhanced and flaws removed. Also, just remember that sometimes the flaws are the very thing that makes an image so striking and beautiful. Don't be so quick to erase them.
