On August 17th, 2013, an illegal campfire started by a hunter, ended with over 400 square miles burnt, and a cost of over 127 million dollars.
Although firefighters kept the blaze out of Yosemite Valley, many places like the land around Hetch Hetchy Reservoir was destroyed.
On a brighter note, in the long run it will be beneficial, as some tree species need post-fire conditions to germinate. These species will start to spring up for the first time in many years.

This really shouldn't be an outstanding picture, because it's just a lot of dead trees. But know what? it is! it's very effective, all the trees are so straight and conform to each other, the wispy clouds and blue sky, the composition. Hey, it works!

Great photo in every way. I know that some of the bigger trees even after a burn out will rebud and grow in some cases would love to See a photo taken in exactly the same place in the spring and then again in a year or two just to see how it turns out. Here in Louisiana they have controlled burns on tracts of land periodically to keep down wildfire chances among other reasons

There are forests [?] that look like this in Oregon too. Great shot! too bad it had to go that way

I think the message this picture conveys is great and is a sad reminder of what can happen...

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park. I drove there to see the damage caused by a recent fire.

Time

It was just after noon when I took the picture, I remember worrying that it would come out blurry because I didn't have my tripod set up, and I was a bit shaky. Usually the sun is an issue when its straight above you, but there was plenty of clouds to allow a break from the rays.

Lighting

The sun was high, but cloud cover offered me several chances to avoid flares.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon T3i, paired with a Tamron 11-18mm lens, no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The contrast of the burnt trees to the blue sky and white clouds is what stopped me in my tracks, but taking a closer look, I was equally impressed with the conformity of the trees, like tall dark soldiers in ranks.

Editing

Just adjusted the contrast and brightness a little.

In my camera bag

Canon T3i is my only camera at this time, with it I have the Tamron 11-18mm, Canon 18-25mm, Canon 24mm Macro, and a Canon 75-300mm zoom lens. I also carry a miniature tripod, extra battery and charger, several memory cards, and a remote.

Feedback

I believe a sunrise or sunset picture would have been more dramatic, and I should have set up my tripod and remote, it may have been clearer. I also missed an opportunity to catch a similar picture with a couple of the trees still smoking, I passed on it because that area was covered in ugly flame retardant powder.
