Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the start of the 400m dash at a high school track meet in Charleston, SC.

Time

Late afternoon/early evening.

Lighting

The day was very bright and sunny, but the sun had gone behind a few clouds when this photo was taken so the lighting was not so harsh.

Equipment

Canon 7d Mark II with a Sigma 150mm lens.

Inspiration

I ran sprints in track in high school and always had a very particular ritual when getting into the starting blocks and preparing for the race. This photo is a composite of 6 photos of the same runner in various stages of his "ritual" before the race. It reminded me of the intense feelings of excitement, anxiety, anticipation and finally extreme calmness the instant before the you hear the crack of the starter's gun and feel the explosion of adrenaline and total chaos of an all-out sprint to the finish.

Editing

I combined 6 photos of the same runner in different stages of preparation for the start of the race. I also and changed the color of the running shoes from blue to rainbow to grab the viewer and focus attention on the feet and the importance of their positioning in preparing for a race.

In my camera bag

I love to take action photos so I always carry a sports camera such as the Canon 7d Mark II. Since action and sports usually occur at a distance, I always carry one or more fast telephotos, such as a Canon 100mm f/2, Sigma 150mm f/2,8 and Canon 200mm f/2.8, and a wide angle lens to capture the entire event or an extreme close up. I also always carry a 50mm macro lens to capture small details.

Feedback

Use a fast shutter speed to stop the action. Shoot what you like, what you are interested in and what inspires you. Notice the small things. And remember that a great photo does not have to be perfect, but it does have to tell a story, make a point, inspire and/or stir the emotions.
