Good portrait photography like this is a sign of patience, technique and cooperation with the subject. My compliments.

Location
This photo was taken at The 2013 Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck NY.Time
This was taken late in the afternoon at a beef jerky vendor stand. I asked if he minded if I took his picture and he was very happy to allow me to do so.Lighting
This was in side a small exhibit hall with mostly natural light coming in from the large doors with some overhead lighting.Equipment
This was taken with a Nikon D600 with a 28-300 Nikon lens.Inspiration
It only took one look to see that this man had a unique look and a lot of stories to tell. I had to have his portrait.Editing
I did a few minor tonal changes and a conversion from color to black and white. In my camera bag
I normally have my D600 with a 28-300, a 16-35, and a 105 macro, all nikon lenes. I also have my tripod with me in the car.Feedback
Just keep your eyes open and don't be shy about asking people if you can take your picture. Always carry business cards with you and offer to email them a digital copy of the photo you take.
