This is a scan from a film print taken in 1994. Yep, the dirt is really that red! And yep, many still live like that. FYI, I took this when I backpacked across Uganda from Tanzania to Zaire - on foot, 40 lb pack, sleeping in a tent in various fields. Like going back 300 years. Makes my back hurt to think about it.
