Behind The Lens

Location

This was the snowiest winter on record here in the Boston Area so access to picturesque locations was limited. (The snow was higher than my models). The was taken at Morton Park in Plymouth, MA. It was quite literally a carved out space right after the parking lot and I had to stand in the middle of the street to take this image.

Time

Usually I choose to shoot as much as I can at the end of the day but that doesn't always work. This image was taken at 11am. Since it was in the woods there was a lot of shade to even out the lighting, there was so much snow that you can't even see the trees in the image. I saw two wayward trees in the original that sort of took away from it so I cloned them out

Lighting

The light was partly cloudy and shaded by a lot of surrounding trees.

Equipment

Nikon D700, Nikkor 200mm f/2 lens, natural light

Inspiration

I have always like the idea of taking fairy tale photos. This year I decided to get back to what I really love about photography and do some creative projects just for the sake of art. I did a Rapunzel photo shoot and my daughter said, "Mommy, I want to do that!". I said "I think your hair is a little too short for Rapunzel but how about Snow White?" I ordered the cape and we were on our way!

Editing

I did a great deal of post post processing. The first thing I did was clone one side of the background to add some symmetry. I warmed up the tones with a warming filter. I also sharpened her eyes and airbrushed her skin. There was also a lot of tweaking with color, contrast, saturation, levels, and curves.

In my camera bag

I am terrible, I almost always bring all of my equipment with me because I never want to not have something with me, so here goes: Nikon D700 Digital Body Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S VR Nikkor Zoom Lens Nikon 55-200 f/4-5.6 AF-S VR DX Lens Nikon D90 Digital SLR Body Nikon 12-24mm f/4G ED IF Autofocus DX Nikkor Zoom Lens Nikon Micro-Nikkor Macro lens - 105 mm - F/2.8 - Nikon Nikon SB-600 AF Speedlight i-TTL Shoe Mount Flash (Guide No. 98'/30 m at 35mm) Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens Nikon 24mm f/3.5D ED PC-E Nikkor Ultra-Wide Angle Lens for Nikon DSLR Cameras Nikon SB-800 AF Speedlight for Nikon Digital SLR Nikon 85mm f/1.4 NIKON 200MM F/2 G ED IF AF-S VR AUTOFOCUS LENS {52}

Feedback

My advice when it comes to a shoot like this (or any shoot really) is pay attention to every detail. When I started out I was not as good at that part. I was more interested in the technicality of the camera. Everything is important. The more experienced I have become, the more I have honed in on little tiny details. That's how you go from good to great! Also I would say shoot what you are interested in and people will follow. The more you love your work the more it shows in what you do.
