Location
This photo was taken in Charleston, South Carolina under one of the gazebos in my neighborhood.Time
Sometimes I find midday shoots challenging because of the harsh sunlight but when we walked through the cover of this gazebo and I noticed the beautiful rim light around the subjects I knew it would make for a striking image.Lighting
I knew I wanted to create a storytelling image with this strong light source and dark background of trees so to make it more playful and whimsical I replaced a moon for the sun.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D7000 and 200mm lens at f2.8. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I was looking for creative ways to use the harsh midday sun to my advantage and I absolutely love the rim light effect and light/shadow contrasts so when we walked through this doorway it grabbed my attention.Editing
Yes I used Photoshop Elements to create this image. I first turned the image into black and white and merged two images together. I then spent alot of time dodging and burning the dark and light areas for more dramatic effect. In my camera bag
I don't like to lug around a lot of equipment so when I go on a shoot I usually have my trusty NikonD7000 paired with my prime portrait lens 50mm 1.4 or my heavy but amazing 70-200mm 2.8 to give my subject a bit more distance and privacy for more relaxed candid moments. I also bring my lens cleaning cloth (just in case) as well as extra memory cards and power cords. You never want to be in the middle of a photoshoot and run out of memory space or battery!! I've done that before and it's really embarrassing!!Feedback
Don't be afraid of a strong light source like the midday sun. Find creative ways to use the light source to create powerful images. Position the sun behind a tree, use an umbrella to diffuse the light, encorporate the shadows into your images or find pockets of light to illuminate your subject.
