Location
This photo was taken in my back yard in central Florida. I planted a hummingbird/butterfly garden because I needed to practice timing, lighting and settings on my new camera.Time
Mid morning is the best time in my yard. I have large trees that cause shadows in the afternoon.Lighting
As I was saying in the previous section, the mid morning sun was over my shoulder from the east. Nice light without shadows. This day there was no wind, making the flowers stable for the butterflies.Equipment
Nikon D600, 24-85mm at 85mm. No flash was used and camera was hand held. I was chasing butterflies around the yard practicing with different settings, a tripod would have made it awkward.Inspiration
My annuals and wildflower garden gave me the opportunity to use my camera equipment and practice without packing up and lugging it around trying to find a subject to photograph! Butterflies are in and out all day.Editing
Very little post processing was used. I put it into Lightroom to do some cropping, sharpening and a bit of contrast. In my camera bag
Most of the time I carry two cameras. Nikon d500 and Nikon d850 , a Tamron wide angle 10-24mm, Nikon 24-85mm, Nikon 50mm, Nikon 70-300mm,on birding days Sigma 150-600mm. Nikon Speedlight SB 910, Better Beamer for when I need to funnel the light. Induro carbon fiber tripod with ball head and Induro gimbal headFeedback
Watch the light. For this image I used a 250 ISO, an f stop of 4.5 to blur the background, and a shutter speed 1/500. If there had been wind, a faster shutter speed and higher ISO would have been needed. Learn to shoot manual for better control of your camera. The more you practice the better you get...I am still leaning and practicing to "Get that Perfect Shot" always open for constructive help!
