Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the island of Burano in Italy.

Time

We finished the tour of the glass blowing factory on the island of Murano in the morning and the next stop was on Burano in the afternoon. The glass artists and their work were amazing but the simplicity of the colorful houses and streets of Burano were more photogenic and every bit as worthwhile a stop to make while nearby in Venice.

Lighting

It was midday and the sun was pretty high in the sky which isn't normally a great time for photography but in this case, the short shadows nicely outlined the objects and details giving just a little bit of depth to the nearly 2D subject while leaving the majority of the image shadow free to show rich colors throughout most of the frame.

Equipment

This is an older image and was taken with a Canon Rebel XTi and an EF 24-105 f4.0L lens - handheld and natural light.

Inspiration

I liked the simplicity of the scene, just a few pieces of laundry with two vibrant/neon colored shirts in the complementary colors of orange and green mirroring the more flat (but still saturated) versions of the same colors in the wall and the shutters. I also liked the repetition in the trio of pairs - two shirts, two pieces of underwear, and two socks as well as all the horizontal and vertical lines throughout.

Editing

The post processing was just to bring out the colors as accurately as they appeared in person and to crop and straighten the image.

In my camera bag

When walking around/out for the day while on vacation I'm most likely to just have a single body and my 24-105. If it seems likely to be useful I'll add either a wide or a long lens but rarely both as that's usually more than is worth carrying.

Feedback

Sometimes we see amazing and beautiful things and get to capture them in a photograph but more often, there's just the mundane scenes of everyday life and if you look at them the right way, they can be amazing and beautiful too.
