Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at the Bicentennial of Glenmora, Louisiana. Along with craft booths, food and entertainment, there was a classic car showcase. the downtown streets were filled with beautiful classic cars or all shapes and sizes. This specific model had beautiful chrome. I had to get down and take it in.

Time

I visited the celebration in the morning, and perused the car show not long after the cars arrived. It was cool and a bit overcast, making for great shooting conditions.

Lighting

The overcast day made the lighting more even, which I like. If the light is too harsh on the vehicles, it can drown out all the colorful tones.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon 60D and a standard 18-55mm Zoom lens. Nothing fancy or too heavy for walking around downtown.

Inspiration

I've always loved the look of the vintage cars. The passionate fans of these vehicles work hard to bring out the best in their favorite models, and I love capturing the love and care that they put into each car. This image was taken as I was starting to explore the idea of vintage car photography. I want to focus on the details that make these cars special, an the chrome on this specific model was outstanding alongside the bright red and black finish.

Editing

In this case I did not do much post-processing aside from a little contrast boost. The natural light of the day gave me a great exposure, and while cars, you can take a couple of shots to nail down the perfect look. I did take this image and post a black and white version, just to highlight the clean chrome. But personally, the red really works in this version.

In my camera bag

I use my Canon 70D for most shoots. In my back I'll pack my standard 18-55mm Zoom lens, and my telephoto lens (75-300mm).

Feedback

Visit as many car shows as you can! Look for what makes the car unique and try to bring that out with your image. I shoot at level with the vehicle to bring the viewer into the space. As far as shutter speed, it depends on the color of the vehicle, but for all colors except for black, shooting a little darker can gather more details in the image. Then you can lift the highlights afterwards if you need to. While you are taking the photo, compliment the owner of the vehicle if they are there, and ask what they like most about their vehicle. This adds a personal story to the image. Also, I've learned as I shoot to ask the make and model of the car. You can keep that information with the image, and people who enjoy classic cars will love seeing that as well.
