Behind The Lens

Location

My dear friends had just bought their first home. We did a photo shoot around the new chapter of homeownership and the feel is that home with it.

Time

We were nearing the end of the shoot and the sun was falling quickly. Right at the end I had the idea for pictures around them enjoying coffee at their new dining table. The evening light through the window was absolutely perfect!

Lighting

I loved the single source light that the natural sun provided through the window. It also gave a good bit of warmth to the shot.

Equipment

This was shot with a canon 60D with the kit 18-55 mm lens. I stood on a chair behind them and held the camera as high as possible for the top down angle. The canon’s flip out lcd screen was definitely helpful when lining everything up!

Inspiration

I wanted to show the love between the couple as well as the warmth of their new home. They are such a loving couple that the pose and genuine love came naturally.

Editing

I depended the shadows and added a chocolate temperature to the image. Karen had expressed that she really liked the darker warmer feel so I emanated that in each shot from the session. As a little bonus, I did have to darken one of the two cups of coffee, because Derek kept drinking it as we shot! It was nearly empty by the time we got this photo.

In my camera bag

I carry my canon 70D, the kit 18-55 mm lens and a telephoto 55-250 mm. I travel pretty light for portrait sessions.

Feedback

When shooting from above, look at the position of your camera, not just the composition to make sure you are level. Your brain will tell you the composition is flat, but if your camera is crooked, you’ll see that in the final image. Get as high above your subject as you can so you have a lot of wiggle room.
