Location
I took this photo late afternoon, it had been raining all day. We went to a local park that is known to have lots of flora and fauna.Time
It was late afternoon, it was a rainy day, very overcast. My sister and I are not afraid to get down and dirty to get the good shots. So there wasn't a lot of glare to contend with, it was nice soft lighting. Hunkering down in wet moss and leaves, we were quite soggy by the time we left. But the images I captured that day were very much worth it.Lighting
I wanted to focus on the light that was coming from behind to showcase the delicate transparency of the gills of the mushroom. The red tops gave a nice soft pink glow to the gills. I had to get down nice and low to take advantage of the light from behind.Equipment
At the time this photo was taken, I was still using my Canon SX40. I didn't use any flash or tripod, it was all handheld. I tend to try to use natural lighting as much as possible.Inspiration
I love nature, from the animals, to the plants and trees, even a tiny mushroom. This one is of a larger species, but I have gotten some very nice photos of mushrooms that are smaller than my pinky fingernail. I want people to see the beauty in something unexpected and as ordinary as a simple mushroom. I see beauty in a lot of things that most people wouldn't even take the time to look at. I want them to view the world as I see it. Beauty is everywhere, you just have to take the time to see it.Editing
I did crop this photo to take out some of the distracting trees in the background. I wanted the focus to be the mushroom. But I didn't want to lose all of the natural elements. I did want to show this photo was taken in a forest, therefore kept some of the background in the shot.In my camera bag
When I first started out, I didn't have a lot of equipment. I had a camera bag, my Canon SX40 point and shoot. I always kept a lens cloth in there, a back up battery, and a lens hood. My equipment has since changed, I have moved up the ladder in what I have for gear now. I now have a Nikon D7200, with 5 different lenses. I also have a backpack type camera bag now. I have two tripods, one really good one and a portable one for when I am hiking in the woods. My Canon was great camera for starting out. It deepened my love of nature and photography.Feedback
My advice for shooting something similar is get to know your area. Know where mushrooms grow, what the growing season is. Know the different types as well, because some are very poisonous. Don't be afraid to get dirty to get up close and personal. Dress for the weather, I usually dress in layers, and can take off what I don't need as I go. I have seen myself down low in dirt or wet. You need patience, you can't just point the camera and expect a fantastic photo. You may need to set it up a bit, move a bit more to the side to get a better bokeh. Shoot from a different angle to take advantage of light that may enhance the subject. I am still learning myself, there is always new information when it comes to taking photos. But the most important thing is, have fun, enjoy what you do.
