Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my backyard. While I was gardening I came across this Elephant Weevil, I hadn't seen one before so I had to take it's photo.

Time

This photo was taken late in the afternoon with still plenty of light. My garden is on the edge of our large pergola and at this time it was out of direct sunlight.

Lighting

Nothing special about the lighting, I think I was just lucky....that does happen sometimes and we love it when it does.

Equipment

I have a Canon 550, I used my tripod and my 58mm lens. The settings that were used were f/5.6, 1/160sec, ISO 400 at 50mm. I am an amateur and really think I got lucky with this photo but it is one of my favourites. For the background I used a sheet of cardboard and pushed it well behind my model to get the look I was after.

Inspiration

I am starting to really like Macro photography and am saving for a good Macro Lens. So for now I make do with what I have. This creature really fascinated me as I am always looking for something a little more unusual than what everyone else is taking. He had lots of character an was very interesting and a good model for the image I was after.

Editing

I haven't taken the full jump into post-processing, I still like taking photos without having to really edit the original photo. All I have done is sharpen it a little and darkened it a tad.

In my camera bag

The equipment I normally have in my bag are my HV lens, Polariser lens, small tripod, 200mm lens, External flash and a reflector.

Feedback

Experiment would be the magical word, strive for something different and keep trying. If you don't get the shot you're after keep experimenting and you never know you could take something that you absolutely love. It's not worth it unless you've worked for it!! Patients also being the key word, you need lots of it.
