Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is taken at a Dutch Windmill village called the Zaanse Schans. It's a small museum village with the history of Zaandam and Zaandijk.

Time

The picture is taken 15 minutes past sunrise. I wanted to have the sunlight in the picture from the right. The time is 8.30 am

Lighting

The light came from the right and it was the early sunlight. Because I like to work with the Big Stopper from Lee filters I needed, because of the clouds, an exposure time of 127 seconds. Especially the light a half hour before, and a half hour after sunrise or sunset is great. I only take my pictures during these 2 hours a day because of the colours in the sky

Equipment

This picture was taken with a Canon 70D and a Tamron 10-24 mm lens. I've used a big stopper in combination with a ND grad 3 stops filter to reduce the lights in the sky. Because of the exposure time of 127 seconds a need to mount the camera on a stabile tripod and a remote shutter release.

Inspiration

I've come here a lot on this location, and when I'm there before sunrise you really feel like living in the 18th Century. The picture I've wanted is that the clouds where coming to me for the long exposure. This time it was perfect, the clouds came from behond the windmill.

Editing

I always use Lightroom 5.7 to post-process my pictures. What i do is reduce the lens faults, dust spots and add some sharpness and clarity into my pictures. That's all

In my camera bag

I'm taking with me at every shoot my tripod, camera (now it's the Canon 6D), remote shutter release, my filters (big stopper, little stopper and ND grad filters), my 17-40 mm F4 L Canon lens and a 50 mm F 1.8 lens.

Feedback

If you're looking for the correct light during your shoots, always try to be on the location before the perfect light will appear. We call it the Golden Hour. Don't rush a shot, always take your time and prepare the night before. Watch the weather, know where the sun will come up, or will go down and try to "read"the weather. If it's has been dry for a couple of days, the atmosphere has a lot of dust. This will give the colour in the sky. And most of all, ENJOY!
