I took this photo at Point Lobos State Reserve in Carmel, California during a road trip with a friend to celebrate my birthday, so this was a special shot during a special time.Time
This was taken on February 15, 2013 at 6:18 p.m. My friend and I had just hiked and shot the other parts of Point Lobos that day and we headed here to shoot the dramatic sky illuminating the beautiful rocks and the water.Lighting
It was near sunset when this shot was taken and it just happened that the sky turned beautiful colors with some clouds to give it more of a dramatic effect.Equipment
I was shooting in manual mode with my Canon G12 on long exposure and I was using an old Manfrotto tripod at the time.Inspiration
I was inspired by the color of the sky and how it illuminated the rocks and the water. I loved the idea of both earth and water reflected in this shot.Editing
I shot this image in raw but I did not do too much post processing. I post processed this in LR 4 and brought the highlights way down and really brought out the shadows. I also boosted the contrast by sliding the bar to the right about 43%. I also boosted the clarity and vibrance. I boosted the saturation a bit, but not much.In my camera bag
I have all canon equipment in my bag and don't have much like many people out there. I have my Canon T4i for the body, Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM, Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM, Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, and Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. I also have my Manfrotto Befree tripod.Feedback
I would say the best times to shoot this scene is during dawn and dusk. I would also stick around after the sun sets as there might be surprises, which I have discovered many times. Be patient with landscape photography and be prepared to try different angles and take many shots. Walk around the area to see what might give you the best angle for the light and what you would like to capture. The light and colors can change quickly so it's important to capture the moments. It also gets cold in Carmel so bring layers of clothing and bring a hat and gloves. It was a fairly warm day when we hiked during the day, but when the sun started to set it got very chilly.
