Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Nassau, Bahamas, Gladstone Road.

Time

The time of this host was during the golden hour, around 5-6pm.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect, very beautiful. And using a gold reflector I was able to reflect much of the soft light from the back lit of the sun to fill in the shadow of the model's face.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000, Rokinon 84mm, and a gold reflector.

Inspiration

From viewing many natural light portraits of various photographers, I was inspired to capture something of a dreamy scene during the golden hour when the light is just perfect.

Editing

In post processing I used selective tools, curves, levels, camera raw, and colour balance. All done using layer masks. I adjusted the colour tones of the wheat grass with a more vibrant red without touching the skin tones of the model as much. Using the curves tools I made the reds much darker and kept the yellows tones brighter. For the model's stripped shirt, using selective tool with the option relative I took out some of the yellow from the white color so that the shirt can appear more whiter thus making a contrast between her and the grassy field. Then, using levels I made my shadows a tad bit darker mainly for her hair, shirt and eyes. After, using colour balance for the over all tones I adjusted the reds, yellows and magenta to achieved a more soft golden feel to the photo. Making a layer mask I brought down the exposure and then erase then centre with a soft brush for a vignette effect for the purpose of keeping the subject highlighted as the focus. Next, with the healing brush tool I did some healing to the skin (really not much), then using camera raw noise reduction to achieve a softer glowing face with a layer mask. Lastly after I'm done, my last tool for every photo edit would be camera raw sharpening for a nice crispy look.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7000, 85mm, 50mm and a 80-200mm.

Feedback

My advice would be to go beyond the bounds of using the light around you to it's full potential. Invest in more reflectors, they are very helpful in creating dreamy scenery portraits for that of natural light projects.
