Behind The Lens

Location

Took this photo during a safari at Tadoba Andheri National Park in Maharashtra, India.

Time

It was about 6.00 AM in the morning, We were taking a safari at Tadoba Andheri National Park in Maharashtra, India and naturally is looking for Tigers. It has rained the previous night, so chances of sighting a Tiger got fewer as rain creates small water holes which quenches the thirst of the Tigers and they do not move much unless they are too hungry. We had to stop for a couple of minutes at one of the inside entry check posts where our guide and driver went to enter details of the vehicle etc in the prescribed register of Forest Department. Suddenly, I noticed this Indian Roller on my right sitting on top of bamboo perch. Luckily the light was favourable and I took a couple of shots. This one came out to be the best among those.

Lighting

As it was early in the morning, the light was sufficient but curved which can be noticed from the back of the head of the Roller. Tried to get a right exposure of the bird from its back with balance of exposure in the rest of its body

Equipment

At that time I used a Nikon D5000 with Sigma 70-300 zoom lens

Inspiration

The contrast of colors of this beautiful bird had always attracted me and the details around its neck also .

Editing

Enhanced the Brightness Contrast alongwith Saturation to a little extent.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7000, Nikon D90, Nikkor 300mm F4, Nikon 1.4 TC, Tokina 11-16 2.8, Tokina 90mm 2.8 Macro, Nikkor 18-55 Kit lens, Nikkor 50mm 1.8, a Vanguard Tripod and a Manfroto Monopod with a Digitek External Flash

Feedback

Just go by your instinct. Look for the light first, position yourself accordingly. Wait for the right moment and off course move slowly. Any hurried movement can distract the birds.
