Location
I took this photo at the Hamilton Harbor and Waterfront. The HMCS Haida sits in dock here when not on tour. It has always captured my attention the way its floats quietly considering its great accomplishments. From 1943 to 1963 it sunk more enemy then any other Canadian Destroyer.Time
I am an early bird and this shot was taken around 7am. Its peaceful and quiet down by the waterfront, the weather cool and overcast that day.Lighting
I used the natural light of the morning. it was grey and soft and made the ship appear more gothic.Equipment
I have a Nikon Coolpix P530 Digital. It has great features, long zoom and many options. . No flash or tripod used, I was only 40 to 50 feet away from the ship standing along the peer. I was able to lean against a building behind me for balance and steadiness.Inspiration
I decided to walk along the harbor that morning , when I stood directly in front of this amazing ship I wanted to capture the foreboding feel of the ship. I could imagine it out in the ocean coming at you thru a fog ready to destroy.Editing
I choose B/W for this pic as it suited the image more then the little colour I did pick up. Once I uploaded I used Viewbug Editor to blemish the background up to the ship. Contrast was added one scale. In my camera bag
I have a cleaning cloth always. One for lenses and another for camera and cap. I also wrap my camera in a soft Russian hat for extra protection in the camera bag. Gloves and extra battery.Feedback
Marinas are great for pics, besides the yachts and sailboats, the docks give an advantage view over the water and attract birds. I look for different views and angles along the way. Just being outdoors will open up lots of opportunity.
