Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on an earlier trip to Palm Springs, California. We were hiking in the mountains. Absolutely love the climate, wildlife and scenery. Just stunning. I am a self-taught photographer, and, although, I did win some photography awards at school, etc., this is a new passion for me in a lot of ways. Maybe it is an escape.......my other profession is as a personal trainer and Pilates instructor. Like everything in life, it's all a learning curve.....

Time

This shot was taken in the morning after searching for that perfect moment..... I think you always recognize it, when you see it.

Lighting

Light, textures, contrasts are always elements I try to pay attention to. This just happened to be the perfect day in terms of light and photo op.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS Rebel SL1. YES, I am a Canon girl!!! Pretty simple stuff.....zoom lens, no tripod.

Inspiration

Had been working on "Birds" for a while and just saw the perfect opportunity. Eagles are one of my favourite birds. Love all the raptors, anyways. Maybe not everyone's taste. Oh well.. that's nature for you. The light seemed perfect and, surprisingly enough, the eagle seemed happy enough to stay where he was. His eyes and sense of pride were what truly amazed me.

Editing

Post-processing was minimal. Just focussed on the texture and contrast of the feathers, together with some cropping. Always focus on the sharpness of the subject.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon camera in a fairly compact case. It holds my 2 main lens plus a polarizing lens. The tripod is carried separately in another case.

Feedback

Be ready at all times. Keep your equipment with you. Check the light and weather conditions. Just be aware of your surroundings. So many people are not. That's how maybe they miss opportunities. There is wildlife all around you. Nature is beautiful. Check out national parks, nature reserves, bureau of land management. It's all free! Get the maps and walk everywhere!!! It's so fun!!
