Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this in South Haven, Michigan on a mild January night. I was still using my canon rebel Xsi at the time. Many of my early work was with this camera.

Time

I took this at that sweet spot during sunsets right when the sun sets or is setting along the horizon.

Lighting

My shooting style is using a low ISO setting around 100, and a larger f-stop and possible a longer than normal shutter speed. This shot was using f 6.3, ISO 100, 1/4 shutter speed, and a 0 stop. The time of night, or that sweet spot just after the sun sets and with the settings I use take a "softer" image and though it may appear dark at the time it was taken I know the various hues of color and light are there.

Equipment

Canon rebel Xsi and a 50mm lens...and absolutely a tripod.

Inspiration

I know lake Michigan has some of the most amazing skies and sunsets. And with a lake this large the weather is truly unique and amazing.

Editing

Knowing I use low ISO settings and large f stops using RAW as the main editor is important. It is with the RAW editor that those hidden hues and lighting can be brought out. The colors can be brought to life as you saw them. Using the built in noise reduction also helps create those "soft" images. It also shows how with a decent camera and lens you can still produce beautiful images.

In my camera bag

Canon rebel Xsi and 7D body...50mm, 300mm, and a 135 lens.

Feedback

At those dawn or dusk hours use low ISO settings (100), use a large f stop, even try f-16 or higher. Play with your exposure settings, go under exposed vs over...and the results will surprise you in post editing. Shoot the same scene and change your exposures and f stop and each image will reveal a new find.
