South Havens Ice beast makes a brief appearance after a December rain storm...Thank you everyone for the wonderful words. A brief story, I unique rain storm passed through with high winds and just cold enough temps to freeze the rain and letting the wind sculpt this amazing formation. Probably a once in a life time event that cam together to create these images. I spent four hours shooting this light house and enjoyed every minute of it.

Outstanding photo. Made with a lowly Canon xsi. Guess that substantiates the idea that you don't need an expensive camera to create great photos.

I took this photo in South haven Michigan right after a December rain storm.Time
This was taken in the late afternoon, I had spent about 4 hours out there shooting. After she real hours of pondering is it safe to venture out onto the ice covered pier. I finally decided to venture up on to the pier and slowly work my way down. Both sides of the pier have water, and the ice was in layers with air pockets between them. It was both slippery and the ice was littered with weak spots that my feet kept going through.Lighting
It was a odd day with just subtle natural ligthing to work with. Cloud cover kept things darker, and the half hour hints of color broke through the clouds.Equipment
I used my Canon Rebel xsi with a 58mm lens...Inspiration
I kept seeing the image in my mind seeing how the wind and rain created it's art on everything it covered. The urge to venture out there finally won.Editing
When I shot this I was learning so much at the time both shooting and processing I pulled the blues out a tad and let the detail of the ice work on its own.In my camera bag
I now use my Canon 7D and my 170mm for most shots. And use my trip pod for a lot of my shots.Feedback
I know the more specific the better, all I can say is go with your instinct and push yourself in every way. It's not always the equipment but whats in the eye....
