Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my old home, we had a spare room used as a studio, but Rino the Dog de Bordeaux was a bit scared of the room and was comfortable in the living room lying on the floor at his owners feet, so we worked around him. Brought one light in and worked handheld.

Time

This was taken around late afternoon

Lighting

We had a three light studio set up all ready in the studio, but settled on one light and a soft box and 45 degrees.

Equipment

The equipment used for this photo was very basic, one fluorescent studio flash, one soft box and a Pentax K200d handheld and a lot of cheese ???? which was as Rino’s favourite. Bluebell the Pug was a perfect angel.

Inspiration

I’m always looking for different ways to photography pets and make the photo more interesting and as Rino was a big soft lump and let you do anything i thought the hat would be a nice touch.

Editing

Yes there was a bit of post production involved in photoshop to darken the background so you didn’t see the brown sofa. And some usual shadow/highlights and contrast boosts.

In my camera bag

This photo was taken a while ago so my bag had changed. Today my camera bag usually has a Pentax K5, a 18-55mm lens, a 50mm prime lens, a 50-200mm zoom lens, various ND filters and a CPL filter. Speedlight occasionally( although I prefer natural light) a Mavic Pro Drone, with Nd and polarising filters and my GoPro Hero 5 with filters and Karma Grip. I like to work with photo and video.

Feedback

If you are looking to capture a similar image just be calm with the dog, offer plenty of time to roam and get comfortable before bringing out flashes. And offer plenty of treats.
