Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio in Glasgow, this is of my family.

Time

This was taken after my sons bedtime but we kept him up just slightly later as I had this image in my had and he was playing with balloons.

Lighting

There was only one studio flash used at half power it had to be placed on a low side table as my lightning stand was too high to get the angle required. Funnily enough I don't have a snoot so we had to use an insert from a frozen pizza and turn it into one.

Equipment

I use a Pentax K5 as I was trained on Pentax I've always loved them. I used a manual 50mm Pentax Asahi f1.7 lens it's nearly 40 years old and still my favourite lens. My one flash unit was just a cheap 170 watt fluorescent flash unit at half power, no tripod I hate being restricted with movement and I used a wireless trigger for the flash.

Inspiration

My inspiration was my son playing with balloons. And my partner and I had discussed how a silhouette photo is different from normal family portraits

Editing

There was a little post production used on Lightroom to adjust basic levels, darkness, contrast, clarity etc... And then I used photoshop to remove the wire from the flash and the table legs from the photo.

In my camera bag

I like to travel light so I pack what I know I'll need depending upon the type of shoot, but generally my bag will have in it my camera, Pentax K5 x 2, three battery packs, 28mm prime lens, 50mm prime lens, 70-150mm lens, 35-80mm lens, a speed light, handgrip, lens cleaners and a few spare memory cards.

Feedback

My advice for others trying a similar photo would be to have fun, if you don't have the equipment you need there is always room for improvising. Be careful not to use too much light or you'll light model too, I lit my backdrop as I wanted no rim light around my subjects.
