Thank you very much. Mother Nature takes all the credit for this. It was indeed a very unique sight to see. I still question how such a "vase" formed all by it's self from water in a bird bath. However, you are not suppose to question Mother Nature, are you?

Although I snapped the above picture years ago, I still marvel at how in the world did this hollow ice sculpture form? Thank you, for your vote. I am honored it was chosen.

Behind The Lens

Location

We had just moved into our brand new home the month prior. It was a very cold October morning and I went outside and noticed there was a vase in the birdbath. I thought, now why would my husband put a vase in the birdbath so went to remove it. To my total disbelief, I was shocked to find the vase was ice, hollow inside just like a glass vase. I grabbed my husband to view the beauty of mother nature, and the camera to capture such a unique formation made of ice. To this day, I still can not explain how that vase developed in the birdbath. The camera could not capture the true beauty of the ice vase. It was awesome. There were three feet so to speak and all three sides are the same size in length and formality.

Time

Early in the morning on a cold October day. I had gone outside to enjoy the beauty of the area around our new home feeling very thankful to live in such a fantastic location and being grateful for our blessings. The land where we had built our home had been in my family since 1863. My great-grandfather was very right to have selected this place for his homesite. I am proud to be living in such a beautiful area and appreciate my deep roots here. I am so grateful my great-grandfather insisted on his death-bed to my grandmother and made her promise to never, ever sell the original homesite.

Lighting

Mother nature shared the proper lighting for me.

Equipment

Olympus digital, C-60 Zoom. I zoomed in on the subject matter to best capture the beauty of the ice formation.

Inspiration

When nature gives you a special treat, run for a camera! I did!

Editing

Don't you know...don't mess with mother nature? I couldn't improve on such a gift of such a sight.

In my camera bag

Camera, battery, direction book. I am just an amateur. My two children are both professional photographers, I let them worry about all the equipment, lens, etc.. I just aim and shoot.

Feedback

Being in the right spot at the right time is a very good thing. I don't think I will ever have the opportunity to capture a likeness again in this lifetime. I had never witnessed such prior in my life. Not too many people are ever given such an opportunity for this type of subject. I am grateful I was available to capture the moment of such beauty.
