Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a food court in Flushing, NY. Now, these areas are not usually tourist attractions like Times Square, but are where the more local foods, cheaper but just as delicious are found. I like to think of it as a hidden gem, as corny as that sounds. The dessert found in the picture is a trio of mango themed desserts, from a store properly named, Mango Mango.

Time

My friends and I like to plan an entire day for birthdays, forming an entire itinerary. This happened to be right after we had Korean BBQ in the afternoon and wanted something sweet to end with, the time most likely around 3 or 4 p.m.

Lighting

I think lighting in a food court, where so many neon lights surround multiple lights, in a basement, is quite difficult to work with. So instead of trying to bring in more artificial light, I tried to angle the plates so that it would draw the eyes in a certain path, helping the lighting.

Equipment

When going to casual events with my friends, I can't be bothered to carry a DSLR, let alone a tripod, so I just rely on my phone. At the time, it was a Samsung Galaxy S5.

Inspiration

I am the type of person who does not like eating alone in a group, and out of respect for those older than me, I wait until they take the first bite. Now this food court stall only has one person making the desserts, so ordering and waiting did take some time. I decided to take a picture while waiting, and I did like the choice of plates.

Editing

Again, food court lighting can be terrible, and I had to adjust the brightness of it afterwards.

In my camera bag

Most of the pictures I take are of things I happen upon whilst grocery shopping, going to the doctor, walking home, etc. The one equipment that I can bring around everywhere, and be able to pull out when the most perfect shot of a squirrel facing off a dog is in front of me, is my smartphone. Today's technology has really upgraded our phones to almost a conglomerate of cameras, computers, gaming consoles, etc. Our phones, however flat they become, can do so much more with every new version.

Feedback

Honestly, a lot of people I know are not exactly able to spend their money on camera equipment, when they have to worry about rent, loans, food, and basic necessities. But almost everyone I know has a smartphone, so I think for people just getting into photography, instead of immediately buying all these camera equipment without knowing how it works completely, just try experimenting with natural light. I think a lot of pictures with natural lighting can be just as great as a picture of a flower in a studio with lights. The sunlight can make pictures look beautiful. If you have something so amazing, use it.
