This photo was taken at the Buffalo Zoo. Our zoo is the third oldest zoo in the US.Time
Late morning. The compound is open air above with several different viewing windows.Lighting
Late morning or noon lighting is the best for photos in this compound.Equipment
This was taken with my Pentax K7 and my 80 to 320 Pentax zoom lens.Inspiration
The Buffalo Zoo is well known for their breeding programs. The gorilla program is one of the most successful, producing a baby gorilla almost nearly once a year. Koga is our big silverback male. This photo was taken about two weeks after he had duped one of the handlers into letting him out of the compound. His expression is very intelligent and sometimes belligerent. He looks to me as if he is thinking of a way to get out again.Editing
My post production in CS5 included changing the exposure to monochrome, a little sharpening and contrast added as well as cropping and resizing. In my camera bag
When doing the Zoo I usually will take just two lenses, if I am feeling lazy it will include two of my zooms. If I want to limit my compositions and stretch my mind a bit I will take a 100 mm and my 200 mm fixed focal length lenses.Feedback
Shooting through glass presents an entire set of problems. I find the key is to shoot manually with manual spot focus and spot metering. Shoot on an angle to the glass so you don't include your own reflection and never use a flash. Even if you have to shoot at a higher ISO setting you will be rewarded with a better photo than the reflection of a flash in a window.
