Behind The Lens

Location

We were on the way back to New Hampshire from Cincinnati from a relatives wedding when I saw this angel in a graveyard along with some other tombstones and memorials that caught my eye and had to pull over and capture it. If I remember rightly it was in upstate New York.

Time

It was the middle of the afternoon on an overcast day in September. it was not the time of day I was looking for when imagining this image. I had wanted to capture it at sunset but it was the spare of the moment shoot.

Lighting

I wanted the image to appear as though it was floating in the sky as if descending from heaven. The lighting was not optimal as it was an overcast day and I did not have my flash with me at the time. I am a novice when it comes to lighting and flash use. The angel was actually on a hill which helped to get the appearance of it floating

Equipment

This image was taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark 11 Aperture f/22.0 ISO 4000 Exposure 1/1600 focal length 70/1. With a Canon 28-135mm lens with UV fliter. I did not have my tripod with me or flash at the time.

Inspiration

I have been looking to take picture of angels for some time. I was inspired by an image I saw in a book and wanted to capture something similar. Most of the graveyards I had looked at had tiny angels at the bottom of gravestones. It seems there are not that many big angels in America. I was thrilled when I finally found one that I had been searching for.

Editing

The only post processing I did was some cropping and some brightness and contrast. I do not have photoshop or lightroom, I haven't been able to afford them. On this image I did brighten it a little because I did not have my flash when shooting it.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon EOS 5D Mark II with my Canon 28-135mm lens with UV filter. I also have a Speedlight 430EXII flash, spare battery and flash batteries and lens cleaner. These are my go to. I also have several other lenses and filters which I carry in a second bag.

Feedback

Images in graveyards are something I find intriguing and compelling. An image that captures something personal and interesting historically. Weather conditions make a difference and adds to the atmosphere of the photograph. I have some that were taken at a very old cemetery in foggy conditions that give a very eerie feel. Some taken as the sky started to darken, giving a haunting feeling and fall time with the gold and red colors and leaves falling from the trees around the headstones. My next goal is during a full moon and at sunset. There is such a variety of headstones and layouts of cemetery's. Experiment at different times of year and different light settings, its somewhere to photograph even when the weather is foggy or even raining.
