A wonderful crisp, sharp as a tack focus. Glorious subtle expression conveys gentleness and youth. Subject beautifully slips into the dark of the black. A beautiful portrait. Well done and congratulations on making the finals. :-)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio.

Time

I shot this image in the later afternoon for a homework assignment for my Advance Studio Photography class as part of my Bachelor's Degree cirriculum. I remember the time of day clearly because my daughter was not feeling like being my model because it was after school and she just wanted to watch TV.

Lighting

The lighting was set up in Rembrandt style per the assignment requirements. I love how the lighting turned out.

Equipment

I shot this with a Nikon D90 and a 50mm nikkor lens. I used Impact studio lighting.

Inspiration

My school assignment inspired me to take this photo but my children are also a source of inspiration when it comes to my work. They are the primary focus of most of my images and I enjoy capturing these moments to look back on later.

Editing

I do post-processing on all of my work. I use both Lightroom and Photoshop, but I prefer to work in Lightroom for portraits. I have several wonderful presets that really enhance my work.

In my camera bag

Nikon D90, SB-900, Tripod, 50mm lens, 18-200mm lens, 35 mm lens, back up batteries, and back up memory cards, money (just in case), my cell phone to use as a source for directions as well as a compass to know when and where the sun will be setting, and something to clean my lens with.

Feedback

My best advice is to look up tutorials on different lighting styles and then try them out for yourself. There is so much information that is available for free for aspiring photographers. I also get a lot of great information on using Adobe Creative Suite from Train Simple or Lynda.com. These programs can really help you in the post-processing of your work and really help your enhance your work and make it unique to you.
