Behind The Lens
Location
This was shot in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia along the ridge walk.Time
It was taken in the mid to late afternoon, just before all the locals would arrive for their evening strolls and romantic picnics in the tall grasses.Lighting
The weather was rather changeable with rolling clouds and bursts of sunshine breaking through here and there. The photos taken here were all rather different in character, with just minutes between them.Equipment
I used my old and faithful Canon 1DS Mark II with my very new Canon 16 - 35mm wide angle lens mounted on my very new tripod. Both the lens and the tripod were purchased in Bali only hours before the shot was taken. Sadly the equipment I had brought with me got damaged when my old tripod broke in two and the camera and lens came crashing to the floor, very early that morning. I decided I wasn't going to let this stop me and drove by taxi to Denpasar, the islands business district and made the replacement purchase, believing my insurance would cover the costs. This was only partly true as they covered around 60% of the overall damages.Inspiration
The landscape in Bali is rather unique and the long grasses and the dark path instantly told their own story, especially being right on top of the ridge.Editing
Not much post processing except for the crop, which was mostly done in camera, removing the usual and very annoying dust spots and then followed by conversion to black and white with local contrast adjustments. In my camera bag
While on overseas trips I tend to carry fewer lenses and usually only one, my Canon 16 - 35mm wide angle lens - which is great at capturing the kind of landscapes that I love to shoot. I always carry more memory cards than I will ever use as they are cheap, light and don't take up any space. A spare battery is essential. Although bulky, a quality tripod is also added to my luggage and I use a Cullmann Magnesit tripod body with a Cullman ball head for quick and easy composing of shots. I always carry water and although a hassle, it has been a life saver, allowing me to remain focused and shooting when otherwise I would have had to pack up and go home.Feedback
Time of day is as essential as is good weather. For the shots I like to take, I generally want to avoid people and so very early in the morning or late in the evening generally work best. In this case however, the walk is a romantic spot for locals and it does become a little crowded towards dusk. I headed out for midday, which is a little silly as the walk to the top is tiring, humid and very hot, however, no one else was that silly, so it allowed me to get some shots with long sweeps of the ridge walk for a few hours in the mid afternoon.
