Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Zion Nationa Park. This was just up the road from the Inn.

Time

Contrary to how this looks, this was around 3pm in the forest light works differently, especially in the mountains. It was a cold Autumn day and as you can see the dear were losing their antlers.

Lighting

I used the ambient light and faster ISO setting to capture the mood.

Equipment

Shot with my trusty Nikon D-40.

Inspiration

I was opn the prowel for wild turkeys when I happened upon this beauty. Shooting wildlife in nature means take the shot when you have it or lose it forever. I clicke off several shots before moving a bit closer to get this shot. The leaves on the ground, the broken antler, the thickening coat all show signs that winter will soon be here.

Editing

I am a purist when it comes to my photography. I do as little as possible in post processes. Crop, sign and that's it. Anything else and it is no longer a photograph but a piece of art...the canvas being the original photo. I honestly believe that if you have to do any processing to your photos to get the picture you want, you need some practice. I always shoot multiples, that way the shot i want is more than likely there.

In my camera bag

My bag has changed over the years and now includes a Nikon D-3500, Nikkor 70-300mm; Nikkor 18-55mm; Tamron 55-200mm; Andoer 400-800mm; Andoer Lens filter kits; Nikon Filter kits; Nikon 50mm ; I have other Micro lenses that I use for close shooting, Only cary those when the shoot requires them.

Feedback

If you see something you like, shoot it and shoot it again you don't want to loose your chance. Digital photography has made life easy in the repect of shooting multples to get that one shot...you just need a bigger card or carry mutiples. Also, when shooting in nature, always be aware of your surounding and DO NOT MOVE too quickly. This has two fold reason; you don't want to scare your subject away; you don't want to miss anything. I have capture a Bear and moments later a rare fly in macro...all because I take my time and find my targets and move slowly so I dont loose my subjects.
