Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a festival in a small village in Italy. There were many street artists who had shown their talent by playing with the fire.

Time

It was in the evening.

Lighting

The light was quite poor, also because for the time of the day. In fact, I had to increase a bit the shutter speed. This is why the subjects look blurry. I used anyway only the light radiated by the fire to create a light effect.

Equipment

The only equipment I used was an analog canon. Specifically, it was the canon EOS 300 equipped by an 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

When I took this photo, I was following a course about history of photography. Thus, at that time my mind was completely embedded into the “black and white” era. By seeing at all those old pictures taken via the first analog cameras, an astonishing sense of mystery swamped me so much, that I wanted to recreate it in my pictures. Thus I thought, "there is nothing better than a game with the fire!”

Editing

This photo was shot with an analog camera. Thus, as far I am concerned, any post production was unlikely doable. I developed the photo by myself in the darkroom, hence I just worked a bit on lighting, as much as I could. That is why one can see the typical grain of the analog pictures appearing on the dark parts of the photo.

In my camera bag

Due to the high prices of photo equipments, I can only rely on a fundamental equipment. For instance, I bought few years ago a canon EOS 1000D equipped with an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm zoom. My last purchase was the 90mm macro lens by Tamron.

Feedback

The unique advice that I can give, it is to shot in every situation and trying to do it in every particular and spectacular situation, even if in the presence of a poor illumination, or even worse conditions. By capturing these events, you can have really wonderful effects. For the particular case of my picture, you can see the particular effect given by the fire, even if it was late in the evening and the light was really poor.
