I have been there, it's almost impossible to catch the whole Cathedral, but you did it, and with minimum tourist. Well done!

Behind The Lens

Location

Well, the photo of St.Vitus's Cathedral (in fact there were 2 photos) was taken in the 3rd Courtyard of Prague's Castle.

Time

The photo was taken at 18.22 on Dec 4, 2013, when I went back home from the Olbram Zoubek's statue exhibition that took place in the Riding school of the Castle. The courtyard was completely empty, just the Gothic Cathedral shined like a gem.No wander I was tempted to take a picture of it

Lighting

Fortunately the Cathedral is well-enlightened by strong lights, otherwise it would be very difficult to take any picture. No additional lights, of course

Equipment

I took the picture with my Sony A57 and the lens Sony DT 18-55, 3.5-5.6. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

A partial answer has been given above. The atmosphere at the time the picture was taken was in a sense unique. Who knows the place can confirm that the courtyard is normally full of people (perhaps except a winter time). At the time of taking the shot I was the only person in the 3rd courtyard - an exceptional moment.

Editing

A night shot usually needs a lot of post processing and this picture is no exception. As has been hinted above, I took two shots and combined them into one picture. The operating system I use is Linux, which implies that my main picture editor is the GIMP. I also use the Hugin program (a panorama stitcher). In addition, the Noise Ninja was used to reduce noise a bit as the shots were taken at f4, 1/50 and ISO 3200.

In my camera bag

My bag is not very big, which means I just carry the lenses that could be the most useful ones. In the city like Prague a wide angle lens is always needed, more particular the Sony 16-50 is almost always therein. Then the CZ 50 f1.4 with the old superb Minolta 200 f2.8 is a must - this is the basic stuff. My camera is now the Sony A77II.

Feedback

Well, many pictures are taken just by chance, which is the case of this photo - by chance there were no people in front of the Cathedral. So, one should be ready for unusual situations and should have a good sense for such situations. On the other hand, many situations can be expected and foreseen ahead of time.Any advice? I would like to know such an advice!
