Location
This photo was taken on Malham Tarn in North Yorksire, UK.Time
This was actually taken midday. It was pretty cold outside so I felt a little guilty about having so few clothes on Anna, but she never complained and was particularly keen to get the shot despite the cold.Lighting
We had a lot of cloud cover so the light was pretty soft despite being a midday shoot. I supplemented with a couple of speed lights as well.Equipment
The camera I used was my 5D Mk III. I had it on a tripod while I held a flash in my hand and my wife held another flash camera right at about 3:30 - 4 o'clock of the subject. It was a fairly simple set up.Inspiration
I had done a few maternity shoots by this point and I wanted to do something a little more epic. This was one of my favorite locations for landscapes so I asked Anna if she would be up for something a little different. She was so we took a road trip out to this location.Editing
I did quite a bit of post work on this shot. There are actually 16 different shots stitch together to make this image. I used 6 shots to stitch together the background and get a more panoramic feel. The wind was not being particular helpful so I took dozens of shots of the cloth blowing and stitched together 9 of them to get the effect you see here. For color, I wanted the background to feel a bit "otherwordly" while keeping Anna's color mostly natural. In my camera bag
Nowadays, I typically have a 5D Mk III, 70-200mm 2.8 IS, 17-40, and 50mm. I'm usually shooting from a Really Right Stuff tripod.Feedback
My main piece of advice would be to have a plan. Taking a pregnant woman out in the cold and barely covering her for a shoot is not going to be a comfortable situation for anybody. It's not the most ideal situation when you are shooting for photo manipulation as the sessions tend to be longer. Be ready to go as soon as she takes her coat off and get the shots as quickly as possible. The best way to accomplish that is to know what you need ahead of time and do as much of it as you can without the model.
