Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Knaresborough, UK.

Time

It was late afternoon when this photo was shot.

Lighting

All natural, shooting into the sun. I tried to stick just enough sun behind the pillar to get a usable shot.

Equipment

This was taken with a 5D3, 17-40mm, on a tripod.

Inspiration

This particular viaduct has been photographed so many times it is very hard to come up with a refreshing view. I wanted to get an angle that isn't seen that often.

Editing

It's an HDR shot with quite a bit of post work on top of it. With the plethora of images of this viaduct I wanted to tell the story in a different way, but stay true to the setting. This town has has such a long a storied history I wanted to have that vintage feel while not hiding that it's a modern image.

In my camera bag

5D3, 17-40mm, 70-200mm f2.8 IS

Feedback

It's an unpredictable shot. I'm bracketing 7 images, knowing that every one of them is going to have a significant portion of the image blown out. It's the kind of shot that I'm never comfortable that "I have it" so I shoot a lot of images, with a lot of different settings and hope for the best when I get them back home. I'd suggest you do the same.
