Location
This was taken on a sunny winter day at the UW Botanic Gardens in Seattle, WA. My dog, Carbon, was trying out the water for the first time and got soaked. I tried taking quite a few shots of him but I had my 70-300mm attached for birding, so having him on the leash meant he was too close for me to get anything useable. I switched to the 18-55 when he finally calmed down and was able to get this shot as he sat in the reeds waiting to continue exploring.Time
This was taken in the mid afternoon hours, I tend to take Carbon on exploratory walks to keep him moving, out of the house, and encourage his curiosity. He is the best dog I've ever met or owned, and he's my best friend.Lighting
The lighting was very harsh on this day, I compensated with a CP filter and let the highlights blow out on the reeds for an interesting bokeh as well as better detail on Carbon's wet fur.Equipment

I love my dog, I can't keep my lens off him for long.Editing

Use a wide angle and get as close to your subject as possible, focus on the eye closest to center and make sure there is a decent background for the bokeh. I used a fairly narrow depth of field to isolate his face in this shot.
