Location
This photograph was taken in Iceland. I was at a photography workshop, and I was standing on the shore of a glacial lagoon. This glacier was on the mountain across the lagoon, beyond the icebergs. We spend several hours in this place, and I took hundreds of photos there, but this one is my favourite.Time
I think this was taken around late morning. It had been raining earlier in the day, and the clouds were very low, and moving quickly.Lighting
Because it had been raining, and the clouds were moving across the top of the mountains, the light was just perfect. The sun was behind the clouds, but it was still fairly bright, giving a moody look to the black clouds.Equipment
I used a Nikon D600, on a Manfrotto tripod. The lens was a Nikkor 24 - 70, 2.8.Inspiration
The whole scene seemed a bit ethereal to me. I was somewhat in awe of my surroundings, having never been to Iceland before. I was just standing there looking at the lagoon with all of the icebergs, and as the clouds moved across the mountain, this scene just opened up in front of me. It seemed a bit magical!Editing
Initial post-processing was done in Lightroom (reduce highlights, raise the shadows, etc.), and then I put it into ColourEfexPro to bring out some detail. Because this photo was taken with the D600, and I was having trouble with oil-spotting, there were many, many spots on the photo. I had to spend about an hour with it in Lightroom, to remove all the spots. In my camera bag
My camera is now a Nikon D750, and the 24 - 70 is my "go-to" lens, but I also have an 80 - 400, and a 110 macro lens. I also carry a Nikon D300 which has been converted to infrared. That has a 70 - 200 lens on it. I also have three Lensbaby lenses, which are special effects lenses, and I always have my tripod with me.Feedback
When travelling to other countries, I try to check the weather forecast before I leave. This helps me know what to expect, and pack accordingly. In Iceland, we had a mixed bag of weather. This particular day in September, it had been raining lightly, but the day before it had rained constantly. The days were warm, but there was frost in the evenings. Just be prepared for anything, and use common sense. When you arrive at a place where you want to take photos, wander around for a while, and always look behind you. You can miss out on great shots by just focussing on what is directly in front of you.
