Behind The Lens

Location

After planning the location, I hit the road to travel a couple of cities away from where I live (to Oshawa Ontario) where there's a high cliff with an unrestricted view across Lake Ontario.

Time

I don't recall specifically what time it was since I arrived before sunrise and just waited until the sun rose to where I had envisioned the shot. I remember that is was really cold. When you have an unrestricted view, it's usually accompanied by unrestricted winds.

Lighting

I was hoping for a very golden sunrise which seems to happen in winter more so than summer. I had taken a few test shots as the sun rose to make sure I had the exposure correct to really draw out the golden hue.

Equipment

I was using my Pentax K-30 with the Pentax DA 50 F/1.8 prime lens (nifty 50 as it's called). The camera was mounted to a tripod and I used a wireless shutter remote so the camera wouldn't move due to pressing the shutter button. I also manually focused the shot so the focus would not change for each shot.

Inspiration

I have a few sunset photos and really wanted to capture a beautiful sunrise in all its glory. I was inspired by the warmth of light that typically comes from a sunrise on a clear day and set out to capture that moment.

Editing

I did do a little processing. I shoot in raw format so the images do need to be processed. I added a tad of brightness, adjusted shadows and increased vibrancy a tad to replicate the look and feel that I saw with my own eyes.

In my camera bag

I typically travel light. I usually have 1 camera body with a wider angle lens attached (17-70mm) and a 55-300 mm in the bag in case of wildlife. Generally, I plan for the days outing so I only take what I need. If it'll be landscapes, I'll just take one lens and a tripod specifically for that. Wildlife? I'll just take the one lens for that. I have a seperate bag for lighting needs.

Feedback

Take the time to plan ahead. Wake up early and arrive early so you're ready at the right moment. Also, dress for the occasion. It was cold when I took this photo so I was wearing a winter jacket, gloves and winter hat. You need to be comfortable so you can concentrate on the capture you want. You never want to be in a situation where you're rushing and you miss your once in a lifetime momentm
