Location
This was captured in FanTan Alley on Vancouver Island (Victoria) British Columbia, Canada. It really caught my attention when I was walking down this narrow alley. What really stood out at the time was the address of 23 1/2 because it was one of the tiniest door ways I have ever seen.Time
It was roughly around 2 PM on an overcast day. Low traffic in the alley allowed me to compose it carefully.Lighting
The overcast lighting really balanced the light nicely. A nice smooth even light really brought out the details that I normally wouldn't have been able to capture had it been sunny.Equipment
This was shot with my Sony a77 sporting the 16-50mm 2.8Inspiration
I've always loved black and white photographs. It's as if we travel to another time, a distant past. When I saw the door, the paint chipping off, the flower pot hanging above and the Chinese scripture, I felt I had to capture this as it really fascinated me with it's size and simplicity surrounded by the brick wall and decaying stone step.Editing
When I brought this photo into Photoshop, I already made my mind up with the general look of black and white I wanted to achieve so I tweaked the channels to my liking and afterward, I applied a minimal high pass filter to get a little more sharpening. I did correct the perspective because of barrel distortion and I think it turned out exactly, or really close anyway, to the way I saw it with my eyes.In my camera bag
I always have my 16-50mm f2.8 and my hvl-f42am in the event I need some extra light. Backup cards, gray card and an old Minolta 50mm f1.8Feedback
Sometimes you have to slow down. What I mean by that is, if something catches your eye, take the time to look at why it caught your eye in the first place! It's easy to take a snap shot but you really have to focus on all the fundamentals and take your time to get it right. Keep in mind that your vision is exactly that and no one can tell you what to see! How you decide to compose your vision and post process it is truly unique for all of us and that's what makes photography absolutely amazing! The creativity in all of us really special and we should take advantage of that.
