Location
I captured this photo under the pier in Ocean Beach, California in San Diego County.Time
I took the photo early in the day before the locals and tourists arrived.Lighting
I love shooting piers and waves. The early morning soft light caught my eye and provide nice even lighting underneath the pier.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 mounted on a SLIK 700DX tripod. I used a Nikkor DX 55-300 mm zoom lens. I also used a 3-stop neutral density filter in order to keep the shutter open longer for a silky water effect.Inspiration
The image made me think of an outdoor cathedral with the beautiful colors and the white pillars. The motion of the waves added a nice flow and sense of action to the image.Editing
I processed the photo in Lightroom 4, bringing up the shadows and reducing the highlights a bit.In my camera bag
I tend to keep several lenses in my bag to compliment my Nikon D7000. They include a micro, telephoto, wide angle and a 35mm prime lens. I also keep neutral density filters and graduated filters in my bag. I tend to capture large landscape images and micro flower shots.Feedback
My advice when shooting seascapes in popular areas on the West Coast is to arrive early to the location to avoid crowds and capture soft morning light. I also suggest taking several images when shooting wave photos in order to capture just the right motion. Zooming in under a pier helps to keep our distracting elements and focus the viewers attention on the waves and pillars.
