Location
The photo was taken at Goleta Beach, near Santa Barbara, California at sunrise.Time
The image was captured during the blue hour, just before sunrise.Lighting
I liked the soft, natural light in the early morning dawn, and intended to capture the moon in the scene.Equipment
The photo was shot with a Nikon D60 mounted on a SLIK 700DX tripod. I used a Tamron 10mm - 24mm lens. The following settings were used: ISO 100, 10mm, f/20 30 sec.Inspiration
I love shooting sunrise and sunset coastal scenes. I set the speed to 30 seconds in order to show the water as silky, and to allow a long enough exposure to capture the blue in the sky. I believe the photo paints a peaceful and pleasant scene. I wanted to capture the scene early enough for the pier lights to still be illuminated while achieving the soft light bathing the ocean and the sand.Editing
The right side of the photo was a bit darker, so I lighted up in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I tend to haul around a pretty big photo backpack that contains the following: Nikon D7000 Graduated ND filters Nikkor and Tamron lens (55mm - 300mm, 10mm - 24mm, 24mm - 70mm, 55mm - 85mm, and a 35mm) Nikon SB300 flashFeedback
My advice is to get up early to avoid the beach crowds, and to capture the soft light. I do my best thinking at the beach, and find it to be a place of relaxation and renewal. I like using a long exposure and a small aperture in order to get a silky effect on the water and sharp detail on the pier. The small aperture gives you the light sunburst, which is a nice affect. Look for leading lines that draw the viewer into the photo, such as a pier. Also, try to place the horizon in the upper or lower third of the photo.
